Bluemarlin’s Craftsmanship-Infused Design Honours Culture, Tradition, and Modernity in Every Sip

Maltese gin brand Islands8 has undergone a striking packaging makeover, courtesy of design agency Bluemarlin. The revamp is a tribute to the island’s rich culture, craft, and natural beauty.

Bluemarlin’s approach was to encapsulate the essence of Malta within the packaging. Their design incorporates intricate details reminiscent of Maltese craftsmanship, featuring elements such as ironwork and woodwork found throughout the islands, as well as tile patterns that reflect the nation’s history. The Maltese cross, a symbol of the country’s heritage, is subtly integrated into the label, seamlessly merging tradition with modernity. The chosen terracotta and aqua colour scheme evokes the sunny climate and stunning seascapes of the region.

Annabel Xuereb, co-founder of Islands8, emphasised the brand’s dedication to Maltese culture and the importance of partnering with an agency that comprehended their values. She said, “The Bluemarlin creative team has come up with a brand system that speaks to the gin itself and embodies Maltese culture in ‘spirit form’.”

George Xuereb, Islands8 co-founder, applauded Bluemarlin’s passion and dedication throughout the design process, which resulted in a product that stands out on the shelf and in optic line-ups.

Andrew Eyles, CEO of Bluemarlin, highlighted their commitment to supporting innovative ventures. He commented, “We partnered with Islands8 because George and Annabel wanted to do something different. We saw it as an opportunity to evolve the story of gin and move it away from botanical tropes.”

Gareth Roberts, design director at Bluemarlin, described the new packaging as proudly and uniquely Maltese, tailored to the national consumer base and target audience while being bold enough to compete in a market dominated by established international brands.
