In a groundbreaking move, Stella McCartney has introduced MIRUM, a revolutionary alternative to animal leather, in her Winter 2023 collection showcased at Paris Fashion Week. This eco-conscious choice underscores the British designer’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and animal welfare.
MIRUM, a plant-based material that is completely devoid of plastic and 100% recyclable, takes centre stage as it forms the foundation of the newly revamped Falabella and Frayme bags. Unlike traditional leather production processes notorious for their detrimental impact on the environment, MIRUM is derived from natural ingredients, significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with the bags.
Stella McCartney’s collaboration with the American company NFW played a pivotal role in the development of MIRUM, reinforcing the brand’s dedication to sustainable fashion. Since its inception in 2001, the fashion label has remained steadfast in its commitment to avoid using animal leather, feathers, fur, or skins.
The project received support from the SOS Collab Fund, an investment fund co-founded by Stella McCartney herself, which aims to invest in companies that contribute to a more sustainable economy. One of the key beneficiaries of this fund is Natural Fiber Welding, an organization that specializes in inventing and manufacturing sustainable materials derived from nature.
The Winter 2023 runway show marked the perfect occasion for Stella McCartney to unveil these innovative bags, embodying the brand’s philosophy of celebrating the bond between humans and animals. The collection not only showcased the cutting-edge MIRUM bags but also reflected the brand’s modern and ethical approach, with 92% of the ready-to-wear collection crafted from responsible materials.
Fashion enthusiasts worldwide can now access the Stella McCartney Winter 2023 collection, which became available at retailers in August 2023. McCartney’s commitment to creating fashion that is both stylish and environmentally conscious continues to make a lasting impact in the industry.
